[Easter/April] Long Weekend Ideas in Melbourne

  • Friday 18th April 2025

Quentin

The Easter Long Weekend is an unusual kettle of fish! As a moveable holiday, it feels early one year, and late the next, so we’re never quite prepared when it lands. But never fear, we won’t leave you lost for ideas. Check out some of the best family-friendly adventures for the Easter Long Weekend in Melbourne.

Create a Memorable Easter Egg Hunt at Home 🐣

There’s nothing quite like the joy of a classic Easter egg hunt. Keep it simple or go all out — either way, it’s a tradition that never gets old.

Hide eggs throughout the house or garden, pop some clues in unexpected places, and add in a few creative twists for older kids, like riddles or a final “golden egg” prize.

It’s a fun, personal way to keep the Easter magic alive — and the perfect start (or end) to a family day out.

Dive Into an Underwater Adventure (Rain or Shine) ☔

Melbourne weather might be unpredictable, but SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium has you covered — literally. With vibrant marine zones spread across multiple levels, it’s the perfect place to escape the rain and dive into something unforgettable.

Meet graceful rays, colourful reef fish, and giant sharks in the Oceanarium. Say hi to our rescued turtles, and don’t miss the adorable King and Gentoo penguins waddling through the icy Penguin Playground (remember to say hi to Pesto!)

It’s hands-on, educational, and full of those wide-eyed “whoa!” moments kids (and grown-ups) love — and yes, it’s open across the entire long weekend.

We're also celebrating 25 years at SEA LIFE Melbourne, so stay tuned for upcoming events!

Wonder Walls 🎨

In a city famous for its art, the excellent news for families is – a lot of the best stuff is outside where you don’t have to keep the kids quiet. So many of our laneways are alive with vibrant street art and murals; you can’t help but stumble upon them by accident. Young kids will love the larger-than-life artworks, while older kids can learn about the political and social meanings behind them. Once you’re done, find a cosy café and order hot chocolates for everyone. After all, it is Easter.

Book Weekend 📚

Don’t wait for the official Book Week – host your own over the Easter Long Weekend. This idea works best for the under 8s. Let the kids dress up as their favourite book character and head to your nearest library for an afternoon of imaginative exploration. Grandma and Pa might like to be the official story readers for the day; extra points if they dress up too! The State Library of Victoria is Australia’s oldest library and a beautiful place to visit, and it’s only a 25-minute walk from SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. Many libraries hold free youth activities and events, so keep an eye out online.

Build, Play and Explore at LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre ✨

For kids with big imaginations and a love for all things LEGO®, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre is packed with creative energy — and it’s included with the Melbourne Big Ticket!

From interactive play zones and rides to a 4D cinema and an epic mini Melbourne cityscape, it's an awesome way to spend an afternoon indoors. Pro tip: book ahead during public holidays, it gets popular!
